Activity 5 - Instructions for Copying Files From One Directory to Another.

  1. Windows Explorer is an application that can be used for many important computer functions. Go to your desktop and double click on the Windows Explorer icon

or open it by going to Start ->Programs -> Accessories -> Windows Explorer.
  2. Hit the Plus Sign on the H Drive (network drive where your files are). Once you hit the plus sign you should see your named directory where you have been saving your files. Your network drive is called your H drive. It could also be your C drive, or D drive if you wanted to copy files to your local computer instead of the network computer. REMEMBER, your H drive is available from any computer on the Boston Public Schools network and therefore is convenient if you are going to be working on different computers and want to be able to get to your files.

  3. Highlight your named directory, for example, rlamothe.
In the right hand windows you should see a list of files that you have saved in your named directory. You will also see the sub-directories that you have created under your named directory such as your images directory.

  4. Next, in the right hand window, highlight the file that you want to copy.

  5. Next, RIGHT CLICK, HOLD THE RIGHT CLICK, AND DRAG TO THE LEFT WINDOW WHERE YOU WANT TO COPY THE FILE, then let go of the right mouse button.
A box pops up that gives you a choice of what you want to do: choice are copy here, move here, etc, (see picture below) Left click on Copy Here. In this case in the picture below, I copied the file to the grade 7 directory.
