Creating Files, Saving Files, and File Types

Instructions for creating files and understanding file types

This activity asks you to create several different file using various applications that are used for technology in the classroom.

We will discuss/demonstrate where and how to save files, what file types are, and file naming guidelines.
Objective(s):

  • Reinforces knowledge and understanding of directory structure.
  • Create files that will be used for classroom or teacher.
  • Gain an understanding of file types.

Where to SAVE Files        File Naming Guidelines

   

Task 1
Create a Microsoft Word File and put a title at the top. To open the application go to Start -> Programs -> and click on Microsoft Word.
File Extension: .doc

Save it in your named directory.

This could/should be a file related to your class, a file you will need for the future, etc.. It could be the beginnings of your syllabus, a letter to parents, or an overall description of your curriculum.

Task 2
Create a Power Point File and put a title at the top. To open the application go to Start -> Programs -> and click on Microsoft Power Point.
File Extension: .ppt

Save it in your named directory.

Task 3
Create an Inspiration 7 File and put a title at the top. To open the application go to Start -> Programs -> and click on Inspiration 7
File Extension: .isf for version 7
.ins for version 6

Save it in your named directory.

Task 4
Create a Dreamweaver (web) File and put a title at the top. To open the application go to Start -> Programs -> -> Macromedia and click on Macromedia Dreamweaver MX.
File Extensions: .htm, html, cfm, and others.

Save it in your named directory.

Task 5
Create a Photoshop (graphic) File. To open the application go to Start -> Programs -> Adobe -> Photoshop 6.0 - > and click on Adobe Photoshop 6.0. Follow the directions for How to Create a Banner in Adobe Photoshop

File Extensions (graphic files):
.psd, .jpg, .gif, and others.

Save it in your images directory UNDER your named directory.

Task 6
Create a Mediator 7 Pro File and put a title at the top. Note, Mediator 7 Pro is a CDROM creation application. To open the application go to Start -> Programs -> Matchware -> Mediator 7 Pro -> and click on Mediator.
File Extension: .md8

Save it in your named directory.

Task 7

Create a Microsoft Excel File and type in a heading for column a in cell a1 that says Name. In cell B1, type in Eye Color. To open the application go to Start -> Programs -> and click on Microsoft Excel. If you would like to try adding more info or another type of Excel activity, go to:

File Extension: .xls

Save it in your named directory.
