Internet Research Techniques - Researching an Important Person

Gathering Information and Writing In Your Own Words

This assignment is to do research on the internet about someone who is important, interesting, or inspiring, It could be a civil rights leader, a community leader, a political leader, a great writer, a filmmaker, or someone who has inspired people or had a great impact on the world or their community. One of the most important elements of this assignment is that you write the information that you gather IN YOUR OWN WORDS.

  1. Open up Microsoft Word and create a new document. Save the document in your directory and give it a name with no spaces or capitol letters. Call it something like internet_research_civil_rights.doc.


  2. At the top of the word doc put in a title in larger letter and centered. The title should be something link Internet Research Techniques.

  3. Insert a table that has two columns and two rows. At the top of the left column put in a column heading that says Info From Internet and at the top of the right hand column put in the heading My Words. Click here to see sample of formating - WORD DOC - USE THIS AS A TEMPLATE.

  4. Go to the Home page of our class web site. Click on the link that says Library and Search Links.

  5. Click on the link that says Electric Library. Your username and password for Electric Library are listed on that page.

  6. When you get to the Electric Library page pick a topic to search for and do a search. When you find some information that you are interested in, highlight it and copy it to the clipboard.

  7. Switch to your MS Word doc and paste the information into the column that says Info From Internet.

  8. Read the information carefully.

  9. In the right hand column write down what you learned from reading the information in the left hand column. Be sure to write it in your words and to include important facts.
